Some tips on constructing a sand pump?
I have been gearing up for saltwater fishing on the Bay this year, and one of my projects has been to build myself a sand pump for collecting ghost shrimp. I’m not sure if it’ll be practical, but it’s a neat idea. So anyway, I will be constructing my own hand-powered sand pump based on various descriptions I’ve managed to find. It will be about 2.5′ long (with a total pull of 5′ when the pump hand is extended) and I am thinking I’ll use 3” diameter PVC for the body. Here are some of my challenges:
- Need to find a "shaft" material to attach to the suction plug inside my PVC body, and attach a T handle to that.
- Need to find a way to seal the "shaft" where it enters the body so that it may move freely, but with a minimum of wiggle.
- Need a "plug" for suction that fits exactly inside the body, and will be durable and air-tight. Also need to be able to attach "shaft" portion securely to one end.
Any tips are appreciated. Thanks.

I like doing these kinds of things so i will try to help you out, even though it cant provide any links etc, firstly for the shaft, go for stainless steel, only a fine diameter, about 1.5cm in diameter. For the top section to seal the shaft and place the T handle through, i suggest two metal O rings/washers, in-between them i suggest a rubber O ring/washer, glue it in place with epoxy resin to be flexible and strong, then attach into place at the top of the tube, glue it. For the bottom section you are going to have to look around and see what you can find, i suggest making it slightly larger than the diameter of the tube and made of flexible rubber, so that it flexes.
I have a link here with step by step instructions. Hope it helps ya out. Good luck catchin’.
