I picked up a couple Penn reels at a swap meet this morning……..?
*very evil chuckle*
I picked up a Penn 920 Level Wind, 930 Level Wind and a 940 Levelmatic for dirt cheap. The 920 was , the 930 was and the 940 was . Both my grandfather and dad have had these in the past and they say I got them for one hell of a f*cking steal. That’s my dad’s words. I think I did also. What do you think? I asked them both if they thought they were Penn’s attempt at a bass reel. My grandfather said maybe. He used his for catfish and light saltwater. My dad said he used his for calico bass off the party boats.
They’re in excellent condition, just about PRISTINE. No scratches, marks or boat rash on them. The only thing is, the 940 is missing the end cap. Can I find the end cap somewhere?
I have a Penn 955, 965 and 975 that I use for heavy duty bass fishing when I’m throwing big swimbaits. But what can I use these for? These reels are so cute!
Just a few simple opinionated questions.
Should I use them or put them on display with several of my older Ambassadeurs?
How heavy of line can I put on these reels?
What would be a good rod for them to go on?
How much are these reels worth exactly?
Any other suggestions?

My dad has a couple of these. According to him, they are great reels with the simple exception of any line less than 15lb (mono) has a tendency to get caught between the spool and the frame when casting. 15 to 20lb maxima will work FINE on them. Good for tossing scampis up to an ounce with the right rod.
They have a larger drag surface than the Penn Squidder due to the smaller center hole and the same outside diameter. The drag is as good or better than any other reel made especially for flipping or pitching.
He has used them for calicos, halibut and mooching for salmon. They are definitely NOT trolling reels, leadcore or otherwise. For starters, they don’t have the capacity that the 209, 309 series reels do.
He was out at the swapmeet in Ventura this A.M. and didn’t find JACK! Sez he’ll double your money for you. The nut on the end should be available anywhere that has Penn parts.
They sell new in the neighborhood of a hunnerd bucks. Match up great with a Ugly Stik. l pronounce that "youggly". He has his on older sabres that he built when he had his shop.
A friend of his has (or had) a world record thresher on one. l think on 8lb.
(l think there’s a COUPLE people jealous.)
They are for trolling lead lines and down riggers mostly, The pricing is great if they aren’t corroded on the inside. I would love to own them but use them for sure. In fact using them for halibut off the piers there in Ventura and Santa Barbara County will be perfect with twelve pound green trilene. I would match them out all with heavy action pitching sticks for halibut, med heavy for calico’s and medium for trolling lead-core lines for trout in your lakes. Great deal! I am jealous.
what can you use them for? fishing. How much are they worth? I’d say $15, $20, and $25, since that’s how much you paid for them, but i bet you can find some swap-meet crawling sucker like yourself on ebay and mebbe clear a whole fifty bucks on the deal…..that should buy you a case a PBR and a new "git er done" t-shirt from walmart. you might have enough left to buy some babyfood for your daughter’s baby
Nice buy QB!
I think GMB covered most of the Q well, (thumbs up).
Just wanted to give you a congratulation.
Congratulation!
UPDATE/UPDATE/UPDATE!!- Check out this website QB. Looks like you could find most spare parts here- http://store.scottsbt.com/Penn-Owners-Manuals-W22C1.aspx
info on 920- http://www.scottsbt.com/pennparts/reelspecs/penn920.htm

Looks like they discontinued all these models in 2004. What a shame! These are GREAT inshore reels and can do double duty as a "light tackle" offshore reel.
Hope this extra info helps ya? (GMB still gets my vote for BA)
